Audio not working :< M2NE - sli

I just bought this new set-up and i can't get the onboard sound working, i get this error when i try to install the driver:

Installation failed. Please disconnect the C-Media 6501 Sound device, restart your computer, and try again.

I have checked that it is enabled in the BIOS and i have tried another driver off the ASUS site (other than the one provided with the motherboard)

I have windows XP 32 bit service pack 2 but am acquiring Windows Vista 64 bit tonight ( i need the 64 bit for the 4gb ram anyways)

no one else seems to have this problem, only person i found on google with it was polish and i couldnt understand

Thanks guys

PC specs are:

Thermaltake 430W power supply

ASUS MSNe-sli motherboard

AMD dual core 6000+

4 GB DDR2 800mhz (only 2GB in atm)

250GB matrox HDD

First you don't need a 64bit version for 4gb of memory. It's just that Windows will map out about 75% of 1gb for hardwares when running a 32bit edition.

Being one of the newer AM2 models you should find the 64bit drivers for that model board easy enough. Make sure the Windows firewall is off along with any antivirus programs or other firewall program if you installed any of those right away. Those can hamper driver as well as software installers.

ohh really, i sorta need the upgrade anyway i guess, stuff will eventually be 64 bit ay

I'll get the 64 bit vista and see if the problem goes away, the xp i'm using atm has the firewall off and no antivirus so i'm not quite sure what the prob is

If it still doesn't work with 64 bit vista i'll go out and buy a sound card from a store, im hoping that a cheap card won't set me back more than 80 (although it probz wouldnt be as good as the 5.1 onboard anyway)

thx dude

Well let's hope the audio chip on the new board isn't the problem there. Then it would simply a matter of getting the drivers to go on correctly. As for 64bit at this time the companies have been ssssslowerrrrrr then turtles in providing the support now starting to be seen as far as hardware and software drivers alike.

It will take more then 2-3yrs. before the 32bit days even start to fade since every game or app out is what? still 32bit. People are rushing into it as a primary OS far too soon. Even Linux has a 64bit distro that's been out for some time now. But not many use it. Then the market for 64bit games and apps still has to open up in order to see more then just a few things available.
