what sound would be better out of these 2
1. creative audio(pci card) sound card from a computer that is 7 years old ( which i am using
2. onboard sound card on a evga nforce 680i LT
probably the onboard sound.

Until recently I was using a 5 year old Sound Blaster and it still thrashed the onboard sound for depth, quality and distortion. They're very good cards, if the card is free you could try it, otherwise just get a Sound Blaster Audigy for about $30.

Sound Blaster Audigy I currently use this and they are one of the best cards I ever owned for the price.

The Audigy SE's are great sound cards for the price.
I would go with the internal though, if you plan on using 5.1 or 7.1 speakers.
