I recently had to reformat my computer after my MP3 player software caused it to crash
. I was running Windows 98 but was forced to switch to XP when I couldn't find the installation discs for 98. I got everything up and running - except I'm now getting a message every time I try to play music in any program. It says something about a bad directsound driver. I can't for the life of me figure out what's wrong - it was working just fine until I reformatted. The computer was put together by my mom's co-worker's husband and I have no idea what he did with the computer; he gave me a driver disc for the video card - and I want to assume the sound card as well, but I'm not positive - in case I needed to reformat, but if it was for the sound card also, it isn't working now. Unfortunately, I have no way of getting a hold of the guy to ask him what's wrong and how to fix it. This wouldn't be such a big deal - more of an annoyance than anything - if it weren't for the fact that I write my band's music with Guitar Pro and I need to hear the score to work on it (I'm going to be stuck working without my guitar for quite awhile, and I have to get the music done soon, so I'm in a pinch right now).
If anyone has any idea what's wrong and what I could do to fix it, I'd be very grateful - I've been trying to fix the problem myself for the past couple of days and I'm at a complete loss.
EDIT
Well, there's no need to worry about the sound not working - my computer just completely crashed last night, so I'll be getting a new one soon, hopefully.
