Password protect network folder?

Hi Guys

I have a few machine on a network, we share all our files. But I don抰 want one user to see my accounts folder.

I know there is many ways of doing this, I was looking for a simple way.

Would it be possible to password protect a folder? I have done a software search, but all the password protect applications do not work over a network

Any ideas would be great

You could set the folder permissions to limit access.

or make it a private folder, so you have to map to it.

This can be easily done by just adding in a $ sign in from of the folder name. The $ makes folders invisible to network users.

So, if you had a folder called private data, rename it $private data, and no network user can see it. However, do note that anyone with local access to your machine can see it plain and simple.

You can still map it, you just can't browse for it. So you can do this in run for example: \\192.168.1.100\$private data

You can only password protect folders on the network if you are running domain level network or use third party. This is a feature that windows has lacked for a while. I think that SMB2 in vista allows it, but I am not certain.
