Can my comp. affect my up/download speeds?

Hi, my ISP's advertised speed is 8Mbps, I am only getting between 2 and 3 Mbps. It is a cable provider and I am using a motorola surfboard 4200. Could my slower speed be because my computer is old? Or would that not have anything to do with it?

well when you sighn up with a ISP they usualy ask you if your computer meets the requirements for broadband.

Most any computer capable of using the internet in general should be able to reach those download speeds. However, actually loading them is a whole other story. But to answer your question, if speed tests don't show the full speed, it's probably something with your ISP. There's a chance it could be on your end (router problems, perhaps the computer) but that's more rare.

You computer must be a dinosaur to affect download speeds. Even on my old P3 I can get speeds of 600-700k easily on my cable connection.

go to www.dslreports.com and click on the option for tools. Do a speedtest and a tweak test to see what your speeds are and if there are any tweaks you can do to your system to increase your speeds.

Dslreports is not just for Dsl connections, so don't worry about the name.

You'll barely ever actually reach advertised speeds, those are speeds at optimum conditions. The server you'r downloading from could be overloaded, or just old and slower, your connect could be slower because of you ISP, you equiptment could be causing the slow down, there are a million different variables for each of those senarios. Do the line speed test and see how it comes up.

do you have cable? if you do run speedtests at different times of the day. cable tends to fluctuate depending on how many users are on it at once
