need a new laptop

i need a laptop preferably under $1000

first off, i want it to be safe from viruses and such. second, i need quite some ram, just for things like games such as counter strike. i'm not that good with computers and which ones to buy and all the important tech specs, so i'm basing my decision on the results of this thread.

also, i'm probably going to be bringing back and forth between my two parents houses, and they both have twcable, so can i just hook the thing up to a router and surf the net?

any suggestions?

anti virus is about software, nothing do with Hardware.

some good one like kaspersky, bit defender, NOD32

Free anti-virus software: Avast! 4 Home Edition (better), AVG

A gaming laptop must have a delicated graphic card, 4GB RAM is not important as 2 GB is enough in most case nowadays.

don't know which $900 toshiba you are talking about, no comment

Well first and foremost you want something that is going to have a good processor. Intel core2 duo is a good one. Also Amd turion x2 is good as well. Next if your going to play games and what not i would suggest having 4Gb of RAM in you Pc. If you plan on buying at retail the most RAM you may find will be 2Gb. Now depending on how they are setup it may have 2 1Gb or it will have 1 2Gb stick or RAM within the PC. If you need ram i would say check out newegg.com for that stuff. At least a 160Gb HDD should do you just fine. Now depending on what you like to stick with company wise thats all up to you. Those are the bare basics for what you want. I would check the 17" screens they tend to have a better graphics card for gaming. I hope that helped you out.

well its not neccessarily a gaming laptop i'm looking for, just one that i know i have the ability to go online and play some games, or buy a game from a store, not one that has like 4+ gb of ram and the best quality graphics and crap. i'm going for toshiba, and $900 is my budget nothing special, one that i can use microsoft word, and surf the web and stuff, probably make a few downloads. and what about anti-virus?

i choose these only because of the price and that i can customize them. i'm no expert and looking at any "tech specs" isnt going to help me. i'm wondering which one i should get. i need microsoft word, enough ram and digital memory to play games and such, and a fast internet. keeping the budget under $1000, i want to know the best things i can get away with such as a dvd burner, and wireless and such. thanks for all the replies so far

it didn't show your custom one...

If I custom it I will change to:

T5450

Vista Home Premium

HD 2400

Total $947...

Than buy a pair of 1GB RAM and upgrade it.

By the way, HP Pavilion DV6775US seems quite a good deal compare to the custom Toshiba
