Laptop Temps.

Alright so I am a true noob here. I was just reading some of the threads here relating to temperature. I notice when I play games (COD4) for long periods of time my computer gets hot and performance decreases.

What do I need to check the temps? I have a HP Pavilion dv2600.

Also what are some cheap things I can do to keep the temps down?

I read about thermal paste. Is it safe? Where does it go?

download Everest and Speedfan, and tell us what the CPU temps are.
thermal paste is safe, but you have to take apart your laptop to get to the processor, because thats where it goes...between the processor and the heatsink.

cheap things you can do to help keep temps down....well, you could buy a cooling dock pad thingy.

Right now everything is chill (should be). All I'm doing is surfing the web.

Speed fan reads HD0 at 43C, Temp1 55c, and Temp2 58C.

What is HD0 and what is being read on temp1 and 2?

HD0 is your hard drive temperature. Im not sure what the rest is. Maybe something to do with the cpu.

As for putting on thermal paste. You'll have to download the service manual HP provides to hunt down the cpu. It's quite useful.

if those are your idle temps then i'd suggest cleaning your heatsink/fan with condensed air. this is a must especially for people who put their laptops on the carpet or bed.

my idle temps for the sony sz320 is 40c for processor and 32c ish for hd. i applied arctic silver 5, undervolted, and recently cleaned the heatsink/fan.

investing in a laptop cooler and also help.

Ya but it's only 2/3 months old, could it already be that dirty? Can I just spray air in the holes for the fan or do I have to open the comp?

it depends on the design. for my sz i had to unscrew the cpu lid (located on the top back side of the laptop). for other notebooks you may have to remove the keyboard

some simpler things you can do is invest in a laptop cooler, see if hp has a program that allows you to run the fan in max speed/and or decrease the cpu speed (battery mode), and use task manager to check if your cpu is being maxed out by a program. also if your ambient temperature is hot then your computer will run hot
