$450 extra for 4GB ram?

I'm planning to buy new laptop. I've been using HP/Compaq laptop for as long as I can remember..:-).

So I went to hp.com, pick one laptop and then customized it. To my surprise, to upgrade from 1GB to 4GB cost $450! I said what kind of ram are they selling, DDR6?

Well, my plan is to upgrade the ram myself later, as I can get OCZ or Corsair 4GB DDR2 value select for just $150.

My question, does any of you here ever buy an upgrade 4GB ram from hp.com? is it worth the EXTRA bucks?

thanks

Umm... it's probably 2 x 2GB not 4 x 1GB. I'm not saying they don't exist, but I have yet to see the laptop with more than two RAM slots.

I wouldn't spend that much. I would upgrade it myself later.

yeah, the one I saw in frys is OCZ 2X2GB for $149. Much cheaper than the one offered by HP.

I just had unpleasant experience with corsair or maybe HP laptop. I was buying 1X2GB corsair for my old compaq laptop. It was just $34. But it turned out that the memories won't fit into the slot. the pin is the same, but the width is just a few milimeters wider. Good thing it fits perfectly on my wife's laptop, but now I'm still stuck with 512MB..he he..

Just make sure the RAM you're buying is DESKTOP memory not LAPTOP memory

I wouldn't worry too much about finding the right brand. I have a Dell laptop and with both of them I just purchased the cheapest DDR2 667 RAM that had positive reviews, and everything worked perfectly.

Both HP and Dell charge $400+ to upgrade to 4GB of RAM, which is a complete rip off. But to remember though that with a 32-Bit OS, you can only utilize up to 3.2GB or so.
