DNS Server using W2k3's DNS

Hello all,

I've spent hours reading through this forum or the excellent guides by SilentRange (Thank you for taking time to provide this information).

However, I am still not getting there where I want to.

Here's what I have:

1 Static IP

1 registered Domain

Basic Router w/ Nat & Port Forwarding

W2k3 Server (which I want to use as a DNS Server for the domain, at the same time it hosts the websites for that domain)

I have set up the router to forward requests on port 53 (dns) and 80 (web) to the W2k3 Server.

Here's what I want:

Basically I just want to use the W2k3 Server as my own DNS (ns1.mydomain.com; ns2.mydomain.com) and as well as my host for mydomain.com.

I know this may not sound like a good configuration, and there are much simpler solutions such as e.g Zoneedit. But it's just for experimenting as I am still learning.

I hope I've expressed myself clearly enough. Is that even possible to do? Are there any step by step guides? Can someone explain it to me in simple steps?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Romeo

what is your domain? If it is not currently pointed at your dns server, then I need to know your dns server's IP as well. Then I can see where you are at in getting things working.

Thank you for giving me the details via PM. I'll continue to help you here, so that others may benefit.

The good news is that your dns server is responding to queries. The bad news is that your dns server does not know about your domain, and does not return answers for it.

This is illistrated with the following DNS Crawler report. You may need to replace 'my.public.ip' with your dns server's IP address. You need to replace 'domain.ch' with your real domain. Then press 'Submit Query'

dig @my.public.ip domain.ch

In your PM, you mentioned BIND. In your post here, I was under the assumption that you were using Microsoft's DNS Server. Which is the case? If you ARE using BIND, then attach for me your named.conf (with the real domain faked if you wish).

Thanks for your help! I am now just using a simple Windows XP machine, because I currently don't have access to the W2k3 Server, therefore I tried to configure bind as you described in your tutorial. Sorry about the confusion. Attached you'll find the namd.conf for bind (renamed to .txt).

Thanks again!

hm, that named.conf looks fine. But you say it is for a different server. I want to see the named.conf for the win2k3 server, unless you are having problems with this new server too?

Hello, the config is identical regarding bind on both servers.

I assumed that was the case. I was asking if you have confirmed the problem exists on the XP computer as well. Just cause the config is identical doesn't mean you'll have the same problems.

How close did you follow the tutorial? To the letter as far as you know?

Run this command on the XP computer:

nslookup domain.ch 127.0.0.1
